Wasgamuwa National Park
Situated in to Matale and Polannaruwa districts is one on the 4 reputed National Parks of Sri Lanka. Similar to that of African Savana Park. The forest of Wasgamuwa represents the Sri Lanka dry zone evergreen forest. The park consisting of primary and secondary riverine forest and grasslands. More than 150 floral species are in abundance and over 1700 years old Tamarind trees (Canoes-Moored) are visible here.
Wasgamuwa is a protected area where elephants could be seen in large herds. Purple face languor toque macaque are endemic to Sri Lanka, water buffalo exist here. Sri Lanka leopard and sloth bear are very rare, golden palm civic is another endemic mammal.
A 143 bird’s species have been recorded, together with 17 reptile species, water monitor and mugger crocodiles, 650 species of butterflies, 17 fish species. We now get ready to embark the 4 wheel drive vehicle and by open canopy jeep within the park at which time one could observe wild elephants, spotted deer, jackals, jungle fowls and if lucky a leopards, crocodiles and other mammals and amphibians.
Starting after lunch by which time the climate is cool the wild animals quietly come out of the jungle. This tour will be carried out till the closing time of the park 6.00 pm after drive up to the Safari Bungalow.
Shower or wash and be ready for dinner, which would be western or eastern according to guest’s wishes. Gin and tonic served on the house. Have a good night sleep and wake up late the next morning for a late. Breakfast which would be a typical Sri Lankan Village breakfast. After breakfast walk through this dry zone village to observe the habitats of the villages.
After lunch start proceeding to Kandy through another route and if time permits visit Sri Lankan Aborigines village to see their life style.Climb through 18 hairpin bends and arrive in Kandy dropped to hotel.Entire tour would cover 300Kms approximately.
The tour was excellent with Nimal and his friend. The trek was hard because of the weather but we see beautiful things. Thanks to Nimal, the tour was really interesting and fun ! Nimal is still a really good cooker. We will do it again (but with a better weather).
